Kiteboarding School on the East Coast

Kiteboarding School on the East Coast

Among the surfers, Sardinia has long ceased to be an insider tip.
In the meantime, the island has become one of the most popular destinations in Europe for surfers.

If you want to take your own board with you, it is important to know that roof loads are often subject to an extra charge on the ferries. The same applies to anything that extends beyond the normal vehicle length.
If your vehicle is large enough, you can load your board into the car at the port – the passengers other than the driver will then board on foot.

In the summer months, a shorty is usually sufficient, but in spring and autumn it can get very cold. Then you need at least a 3mm suit.
Shoes with sturdy soles are also recommended, as there are a lot of sea urchins, especially on the rocky coasts.

Numerous schools have established themselves in the holiday resorts that offer courses for both windsurfing and kite boarding.
You can also hire all the equipment here. Campsites and hotels also often offer surfboards for hire.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing on the East Coast

Sardinia is very popular with surfers

Strong winds often prevail on the north and west coasts, so the east coast is best recommended for beginners.
The best-known strong wind areas are the bay at the beginning of Capo Testa (west of Santa Teresa) and the bay of Porto Pollo. Here in the north, especially the winds from westerly directions are amplified by the strait to Corsica as if in a nozzle.
The windiest months during the season are May, June, September and October.

The diversity of the Sardinian coastline with its bays, offshore islands and rocky and sandy beaches also makes surfing a scenic experience.

The Mecca for surfers is Porto Pollo (Porto Puddu) near Palau. Here on the peninsula Isola dei Gabbiani there is almost always a strong wind. However, due to the special location of the bays, there are hardly any waves.
However, I can’t recommend this spot for beginners, because it’s almost always very busy here. However, you will find enough surf spots all over the island to practise.

Kiteboarding

Kiteboarding

Kiteboarders are seen more and more often

This variant is becoming increasingly popular, especially on the long beaches of the east coast. This is due to the more compact and also cheaper equipment as well as the faster learning success than with windsurfing.

I strongly recommend beginners to look for a kite school. Communication is usually possible in English, especially on the east coast there are schools with foreign-language instructors.
A beginner’s course usually lasts 3-5 days. Depending on the weather, however, such a course can also last longer, as there are also days on which the course cannot take place due to lack of wind. You should take this into account when planning your holiday.
After the course, it is advisable to continue practising intensively. Most schools also offer rental equipment and follow-up courses.

The best waves are on the west coast

Surfing has also become more and more popular in Sardinia in the recent years. In surfing circles, Sardinia is considered the best surfing area in the Mediterranean.
The Mediterranean Sea is actually too small to produce constant waves of sufficient quality. However, when the Maestrale blows on the west coast of Sardinia, there are best conditions for surfing.
A surfing scene with camps has developed on the island and some schools offer courses (also in English). A beginner’s course usually lasts 6-7 days.

The best months are April and May and September to November. In the high season in summer, there are hardly any waves.
The most popular spots are on the west coast, because the waves are very well suited for surfing. But surfers have also become more numerous on the east coast.
