Sarcidano/Marmilla

The Marmilla with its mesas and conical hills
These flat, partly hilly landscapes are less interesting for most tourists, but they do have some sights worth seeing:
Near Barumini is the largest and best-preserved nuragic fortress in Sardinia – Su Nuraxi. The complex was inhabited for over two millennia and was constantly expanded. In addition to the actual fortress, the remains of about 150 round huts have also been preserved.
Further afield, you can visit other relics from Sardinian history.
Near Mandas, there are still numerous nuraghe. The most interesting one is the restored nuraghe Arrubiu.
On the Giara di Serri, there is the well sanctuary of Santa Vittoria.
If you just want to take a short trip from the coastup to here, a ride on the “Trenino Verde” is a good idea.
In the Marmilla, which is characterised by volcanoes, you can find the so-called “giare”.
These are mesas that rise steeply from the plain and are home to unique flora and fauna on their plateaus.
The largest and most famous mesa is the Giara di Gesturi. Around 600 small wild horses still live here.
Today, the Giara di Gesturi is a nature reserve, and several information points have been set up where you can book guided tours or rent bicycles.
Northwest of the Giara di Gesturi, there is the extinct volcano Monte Arci.
This mountain is probably the main reason why the area was so densely populated in the Stone Age.
Obsidian – a very hard, glassy, black rock that was used to make tools and weapons – was found on the mountain slopes.
