Larger ships and ferries operate mainly to the offshore islands. There is a permanent ferry connection from Palau to La Maddalena and from Santa Teresa to Corsica.
Fantastic stretches of coastline are accessible by boat, which only reveal their full beauty from the sea and are often not accessible at all from land.
Numerous excursion boats leave from Cala Gonone for the famous bays on the Gulf of Orosei and the Grotta del Fico. You can also take a boat from Alghero to the Grotta di Nettuno.
In towns with larger harbours such as Palau or La Caletta, day trips are offered on small passenger boats. These also take you to the Gulf of Orosei or to the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago.
In general, such excursions are relatively expensive. However, children usually pay only half price.
In the high season, the excursion boats are often completely booked and accordingly full. The bays on the Gulf of Orosei are also well frequented then.
The boat stops in the bays for 1 to 2 hours. During this time, the ship moves away from the mooring. The departure times are announced in advance and must be adhered to.
If it is windy, there can be strong swells in the coastal area and the small ships rock quite a lot. If you get seasick easily, better do something else on windy days.
Kayaking along the coast
It is definitely worth taking your own inflatable boat or kayak. However, you should be familiar with how to handle them, as there are strong currents and winds, especially between the islands.
You can also rent boats in many coastal towns.
For kayakers, the reservoirs in the interior are certainly interesting. Here – as for example at Lago del Cedrino – some cooperatives also offer kayak tours.
Tours on the rivers are usually only possible in the cooler seasons, because the water levels drop sharply during the almost rainless summer.
