In the mountains near Ulassai

The name is derived from “Oleaster” – the wild olive.
In terms of landscape, Ogliastra is one of the most beautiful and varied regions of Sardinia. Surrounded by mountains in the north, west and south, the central lowlands open up to the sea in the east with wonderful sandy beaches.

The beaches are still quite lonely, especially in the southern part.
The coast in the north belongs to the Gulf of Orosei. Here, on the steep rocky coast, there are dream bays such as Cala Mariolu, Cala Biriola or Cala Sisine.
The cliffs invite you to climb directly above the sea and in the hinterland there are magnificent gorges for hiking. The Gola su Gorroppu, for example, is one of the deepest gorges in Europe. Within the Codula di Luna you can hike up to the sea as far as Cala di Luna.
The Su Golgo plateau near Baunei is also a unique natural paradise. Cala Goloritzè, the rock needle Sa Pedra Longa and the almost 300m deep karst hole Voragine di Golgo can be reached from here.

On a round trip through the mountains to the west, you can visit the Grotta su Marmuri amidst delightful landscapes and drive through the ghost village of Gairo.
The narrow-gauge railway from Arbatax offers rides on the “Trenino Verde“. Such a trip is an experience especially for children and not only for railway fans.
