Logudoro

View over the pastures of Logudoro

This region is a vast plain south of Sassari.
Logudoro means “place of gold” – a reference to the fertility of this area.
Traditionally, agriculture and pasture farming have been practised here for a long time. Today, important roads and railway lines crisscross the landscape.

Towards the north there are three beautiful Pisan churches – Santissima Trinità di Saccargia, San Michele di Salvenero and Sant’ Antonio di Salvenero.
Other interesting church buildings are the Black Cathedral in Ardara and the solitary Pisan rural church of Sant’ Antioco di Bisarcio.

The area is rich in prehistoric sites.
Near Torralba is the second largest nuragic fortress in Sardinia – Santu Antine.
East of Bonorva you can visit a tomb of the Ozieri culture (2nd-3rd century BC) carved into the rock face – the necropolis of Sant’ Andria Priu.

In the surroundings of Ittireddu there are numerous relics from the early history of Sardinia. The finds excavated there are exhibited in the town’s museum.
One of the largest dolmens in the Mediterranean – Sa Coveccada near Mores – is also worth seeing.

The main town and economic centre is Ozieri. The town is very beautiful, but a tour can become a strenuous affair due to the extremely hillside situation.
